wood chips in a pellet stove

Wood chips could be made on your own land from brush and trees. You could grow fast growing populars and harvest them every 3-5 years. They are available from all the tree trimming around town. Why hasn't somebody tried or modified a pellet stove to burn wood chips. They take a whole lot less energy to make. Sawdust is used for pellets and you would need a hammer mill to make sawdust from wood chips. Hammer mills take a lot of power. I was designing in my head a solar powered chip dryer and storage silo. I could use the 55 gallon plastic drums for 12 bucks and take the bottoms out and tape/secure them vertically. Them put a fan to force air through the column and paint it black and power the fan with solar panels. Use a auger to load it and an auger to bring the chips indoors.

Lots of stuff to work out and make. Maybe somebody will make some of the stuff so I can buy it. Namely the mods for my Harmon pellet stove.

biodiesel below 32 deg

Found kerosene at Hess in hampton nh on rt. 1, 4.33/gal. I got Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement at Autozone. It says it works for b20 and lowers the gell point 30 degs. Power Service also makes a biocide to prevent spoiling. They also make Arctic Express® Biodiesel Antigel, which is specifically made for biodiesel.

The generall rule is:

B100 from April 1 to Oct 15. B50 from Oct 15 to Dec 1st and all of March. B20 only from December thru February.

I will probably try to push this limit by cutting with kerosene and using additives. I still need to research additives more and try to find the best. I am sure somebody has tested these. Anybody?

Went to NYC over the weekend to visit son Aaron. We had a good time.

Saturday we ate at an afghan restaurant. Then went to 911. Took some pics. Basically a big hole in the ground.

Then went to the battery. Very nice. It is at the southern most tip of Manhattan. We could see an artificial waterfall across the East river on the Brooklyn waterfront. Don't remember the name of the artist which did it. People fishing, tour boats, etc.

Then we went to the American International Building in the financial district. This building used to be called 60 wall tower and my grandfather George W. Saathoff was the chief engineer. It was built in 1932.

After that we went to see a movie in Union sq. "Hancock". I liked it. Got home about midnight at Aaron's apartment in Brooklyn.

Next day Sunday we went out to brunch at Quintessence which is a raw food restaurant. I had a eggs florentine (no eggs). My son had eggs benedict. My wife had the indian platter.Very good. We want to try Pure Foods and Wine the next time we are in Manhattan. Both restaurants are within 8 blocks of union sq.

After that my son went to work at The Strand bookstore. We went in and browsed books for a couple of hours.

Then we went home. 4 1/2 hour drive. Ugh!

Rode some nice waves on the sand bar south of the harbor entrance. Probably got going about 15mph. The tide was very low.
